… it doesn’t help you on the job, it doesn’t help you clear job interviews and it is worthless.
Sounds familiar, right?
NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.
Over the past 8 years that I have worked with testers, aspiring testers, managers I have heard similar remarks numerous times. Being one of the oldest blogs on the planet on QuickTest Professional (QTP/UFT), readers often ask my opinion on what I think about software certifications in general and QTP certification in particular.
Here is my opinion on how and why you should go for certification exams, busting the common myths people have:
How should I prepare for any certification exam?: Identify the best certification exam in your industry. Some industry verticals may have more than one certification exam being offered by different vendors. [If you’re taking UFT certification, you have to be satisfied with the official one that Micro Focus conducts in house. The standard for this exam has considerably improved since 2006 when I first appeared for the Mercury QTP exam.] Check the syllabus. Most of these exams have a well defined syllabus, go through each-and-every point thoroughly. Get some good quality sample papers, discuss and learn from people who have taken such an exam earlier.
It doesn’t help me learn?: The number one grouse people carry is that certification exam is all about theory, they don’t teach you practical stuff.
Sometimes, I feel when we don’t want to do something, we start making excuses for ourselves and then we start seeking social proof amongst our colleagues and friends. One of my favorite books The Magic Of Thinking Big calls this phenomenon Excusitis.
I believe if you take any such exam putting good efforts, you will tend to learn finer aspects of the subject that you may have never noticed or ignored on-the-job.
It doesn’t help me in interviews?: In a country like India, any large company of the size of Accenture, Infosys, Wipro, TCS gets thousands of applications for a single job opening. Imagine for a while that you’re an interviewer, how will you sift through the CVs that pile up your email box? While it is true that certification alone won’t help you secure a job, some interviewers use QTP certification as a starting point to filter resumes’ for further screening. Moreover any learning will help enhance your knowledge. The logo looks nice on your CV as well.
Ok, how should I prepare for UFT/QTP Certification exam?
As some of you may be aware that we provide sample papers – UFT Cert – for UFT certification. We have been re-working on them for quite some time now, incorporating feedback from our past trainees, refining, adding more questions to the bank. The idea behind these mock papers is two-fold. It will not only help you with UFT Certification exam but it will also help you gain immense knowledge over finer aspects of UFT.
Even if you are remotely interested in UFT Certification, I suggest you to add your name/email in the box below. Once you hit the submit button, check your mail-box and make sure you subscribe to emails from us. You will receive an instant message with instructions on how to access FREE sample questions from our ‘UFT Cert’ package.
