To be simple, I would consider yahoo mail application (where we login to yahoo mails to check our mails, etc), amazon.com book purchasing (logging in, browse for books, select one, purchase.. logout, etc) and the likes as web application. Usually web applications have a registered user navigating through the pages accessing the application functionality at the server side...
