Definitely it can be used to test web applications.

Apart from web applications, it can be used to test various other very common applications, such as
1. Mainframe (Terminal Emulator)
2. JAVA
3. .Net
4. Windows applications
5. Visual Basic applications
6. ActiveX
7. WebServices

All you have to do is to select an appropriate add-in while QTP starts up.
